To set the news agenda for News24 in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga, Free State and Limpopo by optimally managing a team of reporters and freelancers.

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualification
  • 6-9 years editorial experience in an established newsroom
  • Newsroom management experience would be preferential
  • Experience in an online news environment would be an added advantage
  • Thorough working knowledge of news production, ethics and the media environment

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of reporters in Johannesburg and Pretoria;
  • Assist the assistant editor: breaking news in producing the original daily news content of News24, ensuring that it meets quality requirements and meets deadlines;
  • Identify and evaluate news events and enterprise hard news and feature stories in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Free State;
  • Produce a comprehensive news diary daily from our reporters and freelancers in the above provinces;
  • Co-ordinate news gathering daily to achieve daily deadlines;
  • News edit articles once submitted by news reporters;
  • Co-ordinate the assignment, evaluation and publication of breaking news
  • Identify and develop news articles, themes and stories for aggregation;
  • Report and investigate news stories when necessary;
  • Identify strong follow-up angles;
  • Remain on top of news in these provinces;
  • Identify and create story ideas and themes on the general news front, including the identification of photographs and other visual material;
  • Brief and debrief reporters on stories;
  • Facilitate the training and upskilling of reporters;
  • Monitor the progress of articles and reports throughout the news cycle;
  • Keep abreast of local, provincial, national and important international news.
